Golden rules of gardening: how to care for gladioli

Gladioli can add beauty to any garden. UAportal has prepared recommendations for growing stunning flowers.
Sunlight and soil requirements
Gladioli thrive in sunny areas, so select a place in the flowerbed that receives enough sunlight. Well-drained soil with moderate fertility is ideal for gladioli, while acidic or calcareous soils should be avoided.
Planting time
For planting gladioli, it is recommended to prepare the site in the fall by enriching the soil with organic and mineral fertilizers. The planting itself should be carried out in late April or early May when the soil warms up to a temperature of at least 10 degrees.
Preparing gladiolus bulbs
To ensure successful growth, it is very important to prepare gladiolus bulbs a month before planting. Start by removing any dry scales that may hinder shoot development.
Place the cleaned bulbs in boxes and transfer them to a warm room with a temperature of at least 22 degrees. Immediately before planting, soak them in a solution of potassium permanganate or copper sulfate.
Planting recommendations
Dig a hole or create a row deep enough to accommodate the bulbs. The depth should be about three times the diameter of the bulbs themselves, usually 10 to 15 centimeters. Add a few centimeters of sand to the bottom of the holes and cover with suitable substrate.
Caring for gladioli
Watering
During periods of drought, it is important to provide gladioli with sufficient water. Aim to provide 1 liter of water per square meter. After watering, ensure that the soil is properly loosened.
Fertilizing
As soon as the third leaf begins to grow, it is time to fertilize the flowers. Apply 30 grams of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer and 20 grams of potash fertilizer. The second fertilization can be carried out when the plant has six leaves. Use the same amount of fertilizer as the first fertilization or 30 grams of a mixed mixture.
Pruning and maintenance
To prevent pests and pathogens, remove wilted inflorescences from the plants. For tall varieties of gladioli, take care of a reliable support system.
