Growing blueberries can be a difficult task for many gardeners due to the demanding nature of this plant. UAportal has prepared tips for proper fertilization that will help you significantly increase the chances of getting a generous harvest.

Fertilizing blueberries

The process of fertilizing is very important for blueberries to produce excellent yields. First, the buds must swell, which usually happens in March or early April. It is during this period that nitrogen-containing preparations come into play, which support rapid growth and compensate for nutrient deficiencies.

Shortly after the blueberries bloom, usually in May or early June, a second fertilization session should be carried out. At this stage, potassium and magnesium fertilizers are applied, which are crucial for optimizing the sweetness and size of the berries, respectively.

The last stage of fertilization is carried out in the fall after the blueberry harvest is complete. This is the best time to apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, which strengthen the bushes, ensuring their stability and strength as the cold months approach.

The process of fertilizing

Before applying fertilizer, it is very important to water the bushes thoroughly. To protect the plants and optimize nutrient absorption, it is useful to spread a layer of peat or mulch, such as pine bark or sawdust, around the base.

As the second stage of fertilization approaches, potassium sulfate and magnesium sulfate are great options. These minerals have a significant effect on the sweetness and size of the berries. For optimal results, it is recommended to fertilize under favorable weather conditions in the morning or evening, preferably after rain.

Important tip

To avoid harmful effects on blueberry bushes, certain precautions should be taken. It is extremely important to never fertilize them with ash, litter, manure, or humus, as these substances alkalize the soil, impeding the growth of a plant that thrives in an acidic environment.
