Giving and receiving towels may seem like a simple thing, but in Ukrainian culture, it carries various important meanings. UAportal tells about the superstitions and beliefs about towels that exist in Ukrainian culture.

When not to give towels as a gift

It is important to understand why gifting towels should be avoided under certain circumstances. In ancient times, white towels were used primarily as a funeral attribute, providing support to the deceased during funeral rituals. Accordingly, giving a towel as a gift can be considered unfavorable, as ancestors believed that it brought illness, conflict, and even bad luck.

If you are given a towel, especially from people who may have bad intentions, it is advisable to refrain from accepting it. However, if politeness requires acceptance, it is customary to pay a symbolic amount for the towel and express your gratitude by saying, "Paid for."

Kitchen towels

The historical significance of kitchen towels, on the other hand, has a different side. In the past, relatives used to wrap food in them for their loved ones who were going on a long journey.

Because of this tradition, it is believed that the act of giving a kitchen towel symbolizes a potential separation. Therefore, it is worth considering whether such a gift would be appropriate in the context of the relationship and the recipient's circumstances.

On the other hand, embroidered towels have positive symbolism. In the past, young girls carefully embroidered special patterns on these products, putting feelings of love into them.

Such towels were primarily intended as amulets for their loved ones. Therefore, an embroidered towel can be an appropriate gift for couples celebrating a wedding, anniversary or other significant event.
