In hot weather, houseplants require special attention, as elevated temperatures cause more evaporation of moisture and a greater need for hydration. UAportal has prepared several recommendations on how to properly water them when the thermometer rises above +30 °C.

Why you should avoid watering plants in the heat

Although watering is necessary for plants in the heat, it is very important to avoid it in the afternoon when the temperature reaches its peak. At this time, the water evaporates quickly and does not reach the roots of the plants, which leads to dryness of the surface and cracking of the soil, which causes valuable moisture to be lost.

Follow the three basic rules for watering indoor flowers in the heat

1. Choose the right time: water in the morning or evening

To combat the heat, water indoor flowers either early in the morning before intense sunlight or in the evening around 5:00-6:00 p.m. Alternating between morning and evening watering will help maintain optimal soil moisture levels.

2. Choose the right water temperature

Always water with heated water. It is very important to let the tap water stand for at least a day before watering the plants. Avoid using cold tap water, as it can cause severe stress, impede plant development, and even lead to death.

3. Take care of the soil after watering

After each watering, gently loosen the soil to promote oxygenation and prevent cracks in the surface. These cracks are pathways for moisture to escape, and loosening the soil helps to retain the necessary moisture.

Additional tips

Move potted plants to a balcony or patio to allow for natural temperature changes from day to night. If plants are on windowsills, protect them from direct sunlight with curtains or blinds.

Also, consider lowering the room temperature with proper ventilation, air conditioning, or a fan. Avoid repotting plants in the heat of the day as this can cause excessive stress and potentially lead to their death.

How often should I water my indoor flowers in the heat?

Check the soil moisture level regularly and water as needed - usually 2-3 times a week. Keep in mind that different plants have different water needs, so it's important to adapt to them. Spraying flowers with water is also helpful, but do it early in the morning or in the evening when the intensity of sunlight is minimal.

Remember that flowering plants should not be moistened, as this can cause the buds to curl and fall off prematurely. To make watering easier, you can use pots with drainage holes and trays. This allows the plant to absorb the necessary amount of water, while the excess is collected in the pan.
