To maximize the freshness and taste of food, a refrigerator is often used. In fact, some products can even lose their taste and texture when stored at low temperatures. UAportal has told you about the five most common foods that are best kept out of the fridge.

Tomatoes

Contrary to popular belief, storing tomatoes in the refrigerator can negatively affect their taste and flavor. The cold air can change the structure and destroy the membranes, which will lead to a deterioration in flavor. To prevent this, store tomatoes at room temperature.

Potatoes

Storing potatoes at temperatures below 3 degrees can cause the starch to convert to sugar, making them extremely sweet. In addition, chilled potatoes tend to lose their texture and become brittle when cooked. Also, freezing and subsequent cooking of potatoes can lead to the emergence of unwanted carcinogens.

Canned vegetables

Canned vegetables, which typically contain ingredients such as sugar, vinegar, and salt, do not require refrigeration. If the jar has been opened, it is advisable to consume canned cucumbers or tomatoes within three days to preserve their flavor and quality.

Citrus fruits

Grapefruits, lemons, and oranges are best stored outside the refrigerator, as refrigeration can cause the fruit to soften and discolor the peel. To enjoy the wonderful freshness of citrus fruits, it is recommended to consume them within the first three days after purchase.

Chocolate

Although chocolate is usually stored in the refrigerator to prevent it from melting and extend its shelf life, this can have undesirable consequences. When it is exposed to temperature fluctuations and removed from a cold environment, condensation forms on its surface. This can cause unsightly white streaks known as sugar coating.
