Putting onions in a regular old paper bag with holes in it can extend their life for months. You will need a brown paper bag, a hole punch, a marker, and paper clips.
Make sure the onions are firm and free of blemishes. Fold the paper bag and make holes around the edge. Fill the bag halfway with the onions, mark with a marker, and then use the paper clips on top to secure it.
Do not store onions next to potatoes, as the shoots produce ethylene, a growth hormone that accelerates the ripening of vegetables.
