Ancient settlements dating back 6000 years discovered in Britain: sheds light on new milestones in history
Archaeologists have made a landmark discovery at the West Deeping quarry in Lincolnshire. The excavations revealed an uninterrupted history of human life spanning six millennia - from the Neolithic to the Saxon period.
According to the project manager of the Cambridge Archaeological Department, Hannah Barrett, the finds represent all historical periods up to the sixth century AD, each of which tells a unique story. This was reported by the BBC.
The late Neolithic artifacts were especially valuable. Among them is the largest collection of ceramics ever found in East Anglia and the East Midlands. Archaeologists also discovered animal bones, seed and grain samples.
According to Barrett, the landscape of that time was wild, inhabited by wild boars and bears. "The inhabitants of these lands must have been extremely hardy people. At the same time, they created sophisticated flint tools and exquisite ceramics, which required great skill," she noted.
Other important finds include the remains of Roman settlements, a stone statue of the god Mars in a tunic with a shield and spear, and an early Bronze Age mound.
As a reminder, archaeologists have found a square dating back to the era of Ancient Rome in Spain.
