How many steps do you really need to take in a day to ensure your longevity: research by scientists
Researchers from the University of Massachusetts Amherst have disproved the commonly held belief that 10 thousand steps are required daily for healthy longevity.
After analyzing data on tens of thousands of people on four continents, collected in 15 existing studies, the team of scientists found that the optimal number of steps per day is probably closer to 6 thousand, depending on age. This is reported by Science Alert.
"We saw a gradual decrease in the risk of death with an increase in the number of steps until it leveled off. And the leveling off occurred at different stride values for older and younger people," said epidemiologist Amanda Paluch.
"Evolution has honed our physiology to walk long distances. This means that our metabolism, cardiovascular system, impact on bones and muscles, and even mental health are all tuned to walking.
Half a century ago, the Japanese company Yamasa Clock and Instrument Company released a pedometer called "Manpo-kei", which means "10 thousand steps". This pedometer was popular in Japan and then in other countries.
However, researchers believe that 10 thousand steps is just a marketing figure that has no scientific basis.
In 2021, Paluch and her team published a study based on data from a group of more than 2,000 middle-aged people. They found that walking at least 7,000 steps a day reduces the likelihood of premature death by 50-70%.
However, the question remains whether more steps are better. To answer this question, the research team expanded their network to include previously published studies.
Their 2022 meta-analysis included information collected on the health status and number of steps taken by 47,471 adults from Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America. They found that the 25% of adults who walked more steps daily had a 40-53% lower risk of death compared to those in the bottom 25% of step counts.
The researchers also emphasized that half an hour of intense activity every day can be a big boost for those who are sedentary. Strength training in old age can help our brains stay sharp, and our hearts and bones stay healthy and strong.
So, for a healthy longevity, it is not necessary to walk 10,000 steps every day. 6,000 to 8,000 steps, which can be spread out throughout the day, are enough.
