Simple tips for caring for your hydrangea in winter

Although winter rarely seems like a good time to be active in gardening, there are many benefits to be gained from the cold. One of the surest ways to get the most out of your hydrangea's spring bloom is to protect it from sub-zero temperatures.

According to gardening professionals, the best way to do this is to know what kind of hydrangea you are dealing with. This is reported by Express.co.uk.

In particular, Mophead hydrangea plants form a bush with large domed heads that look like a shower cap or mop. Their white, blue, or pink flowers appear in early summer and often bloom right up to the first frost.

A similar-looking hydrangea variety is Lace Cap, which is slightly flatter and blooms from July to early fall. The cone-shaped variety is known as panicle hydrangea, which produces clusters of tiny, delicate flowers.

There are also climbing hydrangeas, which are characterized by their aerial roots. As for all of these varieties, the expert emphasizes the importance of knowing when they are expected to bloom, as this will provide information on when and how to prune them.

Mophead and lace cap hydrangeas will bloom satisfactorily without attention, but annual pruning encourages new, vigorous growth and better blooms. However, it is important not to prune in winter, during cold weather.
