Cat behavior often surprises people. One such mystery is the phenomenon of vibration when they purr. Most researchers believe that purring is caused by the muscles of the larynx.

Cat purring is an amazing phenomenon that is not fully understood. However, one thing is for sure: purring is not just a pleasant sound, but also an important aspect of cats' lives. This is what 24tv writes about.

When do cats purr?

Researchers believe that purring can have different reasons:

  • Pleasure and gratitude: when they are petted, caressed, and pampered.
  • Attracting attention: to flirt or play.
  • Socializing: to keep in touch with other cats.
  • Stress relief: when they feel anxious (for example, after a fight or during childbirth).
  • Treatment: purring frequency (25-150 Hz) is used in physiotherapy for treatment and recovery.
  • Disease notification: incessant purring can be a sign of a disease.

Veterinarians advise cat owners to pay attention to the nature of purring in different situations. If you notice changes in the sound or intensity, it is recommended to consult a veterinarian.

Why do cats purr and vibrate?

Scientists still do not have a definitive answer to this question. When breathing, cats manipulate their vocal folds, causing them to expand and contract. This causes the air to vibrate, which creates the familiar purr.

However, some scientists question this theory because it does not explain all the mechanisms of purring.

Let's find out why cats play with mice before killing them.
