Before spring begins, gardeners advise pruning six plants in time to stimulate "new and healthy shoots." February is the time for gardeners to prepare their gardens for spring, and one of the most important tasks this month is pruning. Pruning stimulates plant growth and improves flowering.

Jamie Shipley, gardening expert and managing director of Hedges Direct, shared a list of six plants to prune in February.

These are evergreen hedges: barberry, buxus, Mexican orange and lavender.

"Prune lavender from February to March, before new growth. This stimulates the formation of new shoots," the expert said.

Wisteria also needs pruning. This process will improve its flowering and prevent it from growing in unwanted places.

Benefits of pruning:

  • Accelerates plant growth
  • Removes dead and diseased branches
  • Promotes the formation of new and healthy shoots

Jamie Shipley recommends waiting for the end of the most severe frosts before cutting evergreen hedges.

The expert added that pruning is a simple and effective way to improve the health and beauty of your plants.
