How to increase potato yield: important steps to take before planting
Potatoes, like all plants, need proper nutrition to thrive and produce good fruit. UAportal has prepared tips on how to fertilize it properly to ensure fast and efficient growth.
Site preparation
Experienced gardeners understand the importance of choosing a suitable plot of land for optimal plant development. It is important that the soil is rich in nutrients so that potatoes grow well.
Refrain from planting potatoes in areas where peppers, tomatoes, or eggplants have previously grown. Instead, it is recommended to choose places that were previously occupied by cabbage, carrots, beets, and cucumbers.
To start preparing the garden for growing root vegetables, you need to take the necessary steps during the spring season. The process involves deep digging of the garden 2 weeks before planting potatoes, approximately to the depth of a shovel, in order to destroy weeds.
Fertilizers
For a steady growth of potatoes, it is very useful to scatter compost on the soil, followed by a light sprinkling of sand. It is also important to loosen the soil to create favorable conditions for plant growth.
Among the most effective fertilizers is the use of rabbit or horse manure in combination with poultry manure. This powerful organic mixture brings significant benefits to both soil and plants, increasing overall fertility.
To prepare this effective fertilizer, follow the next steps. Take a 100- or 200-liter barrel. Fill the container (about two-thirds) with manure. Add water to moisten it, and then cover the barrel with a lid or plastic wrap.
Let the mixture "ferment" for two weeks, stirring twice a day. After that, add 1-2 kilograms of wood ash. Use this powerful nutrient mixture by pouring 1 liter of the mass into each hole next to the root crop when planting potatoes.
