An unusual discovery was made by fishermen off the coast of Albania - a white deep-sea shark with a rare genetic disease. According to Sharklab ADRIA director Andrii Gajic, this is the first recorded case of leucism in an angular fisherman shark (Oxynotus centrina).

The scientist explains that leucism differs from albinism in that it preserves the ability to produce melanin and maintains normal iris pigmentation. This feature manifests itself either in certain parts of the body or throughout the body. This is reported by Interesting Engineering.

The discovered shark belongs to an endangered species. Instead of the typical dark gray or brown color, it has a light gray color. Despite the pigment abnormality, the animal's physical health was not affected.

The researchers note that pigmentary disorders among deep-sea sharks are extremely rare, having been recorded only 15 times in different species. The reasons for this anomaly may be environmental factors during embryonic development: pollution, high temperatures, or hormonal changes. Although the lack of pigmentation usually makes animals more vulnerable to predators and makes hunting more difficult, the study showed that this individual successfully feeds, avoids danger, and is able to reproduce.
