January is an excellent month for pruning specific plants as they are currently in a dormant state. This is the advice of gardening expert Craig Wilson.

In a statement to Express, the expert mentioned that with the arrival of winter cold, it's the opportune time to don gardening gloves and commence pruning. Wilson added, "While the rest of the garden is taking a break, this is the perfect opportunity to shape and prepare your plants for the upcoming spring."

He recommended starting with the pruning of wisteria vines in January. According to Craig, regular pruning of this plant ensures more "prolific blooms" throughout the flowering season.

He further explained, "In mid-winter, trim back side shoots that were shortened last summer to two or three buds from the base to enhance the plant's structure and channel energy to spring flower formation. Subsequently, remove any undesired or excessive growth, particularly around windows and gutters, to maintain the plant's shape and control its size."

Pruning roses in January is also beneficial to stimulate growth, according to the expert.

"In late winter or early spring, eliminate all dead, damaged, or diseased wood and trim the remaining branches to an outward-facing bud to shape a bush and encourage outward growth. Afterward, open up the center of the bush by removing all branches growing inward. This will enhance air circulation and light penetration, minimizing the risk of disease and promoting robust flowering," he added.

Winter pruning is also essential for clematis. It is crucial to eliminate dead or weak stems and trim the remaining stems back to strong buds to encourage new growth and flowering.

Craig Wilson encouraged gardeners to adhere to the pruning guidelines to ensure robust plant growth and blossoming.
