How to significantly extend the shelf life of bananas

Bananas often ripen only a few days after purchase. If they are not eaten quickly, they will turn brown and become mushy.

However, it turned out that bananas should be stored for weeks without spoiling and that most people store them incorrectly. In particular, they should never be stored in a fruit bowl, according to Express.co.uk.

Banana stems produce a plant growth hormone called ethylene gas. This gas makes them ripen quickly.

Apples, avocados, mangoes, pears, peaches, and berries also produce ethylene gas, and when stored together, the amount of ethylene gas produced will cause all the fruit to start rotting.

Instead, you should put the bananas in a tightly sealed brown paper grocery bag and put them in the crisper container in the refrigerator. The peel will turn black, but the banana will still taste good.

If a yellow banana is stored in the refrigerator, it will stop the ripening process and the fruit inside the peel will remain fresh and edible for several weeks after purchase.
