Free fertilizer for nourishing indoor plants: collect hair and pet fur

Houseplants need nutrients to grow healthily. One way to provide them with these nutrients is to use natural fertilizers, such as coffee grounds, citrus peels, or even hair from your brush.

Hair is rich in nitrogen, which is an important nutrient for plants. It promotes plant growth and helps them produce new tissue, according to SantePlus.

There are two ways to use hair as a plant fertilizer:

As a slow-release fertilizer: simply bury a tuft of hair in the soil of potted plants. Since hair takes a long time to decompose, it is advisable to place it at the base of plants with a long life cycle, such as onions, leeks, zucchini, and even turnips.

To enrich the compost: Mix the hair with the compost you add to your indoor plants. Compost consisting of plant waste and organic matter is also a good fertilizer for plants. It should consist of one part carbon-containing materials such as dead leaves and two parts nitrogenous waste such as fruit peels or vegetable scraps.

Hair, which is rich in nitrogen and proteins, is an organic material that can be added to compost to enrich it with nitrogenous substances.

Note that you should not fertilize plants with dyed or chemically treated hair. Your plants may absorb the chemicals and be damaged.

In addition to hair, you can also use animal hair, clipped fingernails, and even bird feathers to make plant fertilizer.

Adding these organic substances to the compost will allow you to enrich it to better fertilize potted plants as well as plants in an ornamental garden or vegetable garden.
